“My limbo was becoming my life.”–Kim Barker, The Taliban Shuffle

  • Here’s what happens:
    • Journalist Kim Barker shares amusing anecdotes and a multi-faceted glimpse into life in modern Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • It’s good because:
    • Barker finds humor and humanity in a realm that is typically characterized by war and oppression, and she does so without trivializing or over-dramatizing the issues. Basically, I’m super stoked to see Tina Fey’s take on this in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
  • Read if:
    • You’re looking for an entertaining and surprisingly relatable account of what’s going on in the Middle East (Yes, it’s more than just suicide bombers–though Barker covers this too).

Up next: Senegal with You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers. Be sure to check out my list and the rules of this reading challenge.
